Mugo pine #55

Mugo pine, Pinus mugo, collected in italy in 2010. After I acquired this tree I found that I had made a mistake. It was somehow awkward material and I put a sales tag on it. Nobody took it though. Now, together with Patrick we potted the horizontal trunk as a cascade and it starts to look promising. The big fat trubk on the left is dead and will be carved; 80 % or more will be removed, as the virtuals show. I took the sales tag off.
The tree can be finally styled in summer of 2015 if it looks happy then. The final styling is not a big deal, just a lot of work.

Wolfgang Käflein R.I.P.

A great friend has left us. Wolfgang was extremely important for the German bonsai scene in the late eighties and nineties until around 2010. He has probably collected around 50,000 trees from the wilderness. In his garden one could always find treasures for reasonable money. Wolfgang was an outstanding personality with immense impact onto whoever met him. I have spent many many hours with him and also went hunting for trees together. My better trees of the collection almost all came from Wolfgang in the eighties and nineties. A truly most remarkable man indeed! R.I.P.

Here the ttee after the winter pause. It will look even better in six weeks. This tree is availabel for sale or trade. Pot China and WP.

Wild olive, Olea europea sylvatica, collected in Croatia in 2009. The old pot by John Pitt was very nice, but too large or rather too deep for this treee. The new one is by Horst hHinzlreiter and the trunk appears mightier, of course. The olive just came out of winter storage and will look much bettter in six weeks. We will report.

Prunus ume #1

Prunus ume, imported from Japan as raw material, very big, very unusual. This looks just like the clumps of broadleaved trees that I work on all the time. Therefore I wanted to get this tree. Here the first steps. Michael helps me to tame this beast. Now I let it grow freely. In March 2015 it will be styled a bit more. This is in the Fairy Tale Style, not confoming to bonsai rules.

Japanese maple, Acer palmatum, imported from Japan, interesting with stone. This tree I potted into a container by Horst Heinzreiter immediately. It was not repotted since many years, as most of these imoported trees. Anyway, I cut the foliage considerably to make it easier for the tree to cope whit this. New growth will come in four weeks and I will report. This has a great future, I believe.

Ezo spruce #4

Ezo spruce, Picea jezoensis, very old collected tree, possibly form the Kuril islands which now belong to Russia. Anyway, a special piece of material. Although the tree has been styled before I saw some changes that I would do. Now the main task is to grow  on the great stone by Avicenna. The crown is way too dense and needs wiring. This will happen if the tree looks happy still in August. Wiring is not the big deal about the art of bonsai as most think. The art has already happened, wiring is the additional craft.n The deadwood now looks a bit too dark after ist was worked on, fired and then painted with lime sulphur. It will be much lighter in the future.
